The Hair Loss Industry: Demystifying Products and Treatments

Michael Misurelli • Apr 20, 2024

Hair loss has been a hot topic for many years. After all, over 80 million Americans currently struggle with the issue. While it tends to be more prominent in men, women are also significantly affected. Many factors can contribute to hair loss, including genetics, stress, environmental factors, disease, and more.

The large concern with hair loss has led to various types of treatment being developed to address it. However, there is no consensus on the best or safest method. It can be confusing to begin exploring the available options, but we are here to help.

So, here’s some information about the available products and treatments for hair loss, including SMP, minoxidil, and more.

Ingredients and Available Products for Hair Loss

There are numerous products out there that boast claims about helping with hair loss. However, only a few have actually been adequately tested and had results confirmed. These include:

1. Minoxidil:

This is the primary ingredient in many popular growth treatments, such as Rogaine. It is said to help by increasing blood flow around hair follicles and stimulating the growth phase.

2. Propecia:

Propecia is a brand-name treatment with finasteride as its active ingredient. Unfortunately, this treatment is only FDA-approved for men, with off-label treatments available for women. Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme that converts testosterone. It can help to increase the amount of hair on the scalp.

3. Corticosteroids:

Corticosteroids can help treat sudden or extensive hair loss. These medications slow the rate of hair loss and sometimes help with regrowth.

While the above are the most common medical products, many natural products, such as aloe vera, coconut oil, lavender oil, castor oil, and more, are also claimed to help.

Now, let’s look at some available hair loss treatments.

SMP uses microneedling to inject pigment into the scalp, giving the appearance of hair follicles. While it is essentially a tattoo, it is a noninvasive method for regaining the appearance of a natural hairline.

2. Grafting/Hair Transplant:

A hair transplant involves removing a section of hair from another part of the body to the scalp area experiencing hair loss or baldness.

Light therapy uses medical-grade lights to stimulate hair follicles and help them grow. The results of this procedure may take several sessions to see.

4. Scalp Reduction:

A scalp reduction is one of the more invasive procedures. It involves removing the hair-loss portion of the scalp so that hair-growing portions can be stretched over the area.

5. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP):

PRP begins by drawing the individual’s blood and separating the plasma from the platelets. The plasma is then injected into the body to stimulate and speed up hair regrowth.

The proper treatment can vary between people depending on the extent and cause of their hair loss. However, less invasive methods are often recommended in the early stages of hair loss.

When hair loss begins to set in, it can be a challenging journey for men. Yet their resilience shines through. They may first ignore it and try to find ways to manage it, such as hiding it with hats. When it becomes more pronounced, though, some men may consider getting scalp micropigmentation (SMP) to achieve a more natural-looking hairline. However, completely covering the head to mask hair loss in the earlier stages is not always necessary. In fact, there is a vast array of hairstyles that not only look excellent but also cleverly cover most of the problem areas. This variety of options offers a beacon of hope and possibility for men experiencing hair loss, reminding them that style is not limited by hairline. So, let’s take a closer look at some bold hairlines that will make you look great no matter what your hairline is.
